exklim eX Core Portable Gpu-Overview
Hi tech-enthusiasts, it’s Ahnaf Malik Siam from frenzyweb360 again, To talk about one of the most interesting releases we’ve seen from tech industries this year. Today, We will talk about the kickstarter project from a company named exklim, Which is branded as eX Core. This thing is a portable gpu solution mainly for your laptop computers, Which connects to the main computer using Thunderbolt 3 High speed connection. So technically, You can use this thing with any computer with an USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 connection. Why this thing might be interested for you and why you should wanna take a look at this, I will tell you about it throughout this content from my point of view! So, without any delay, Lets get started.
What’s Special about eX Core?
As I said before,The eX Core is a portable solution for your computer's graphics card. Granted that, we already have lots of enclosures available in the market such as the Razer core, which lets you use an aftermarket gpu solution to your laptops using thunderbolt 3 as well but, those things are no way near as compact as this thing, the eX Core by exklim. By compact I mean it's literally the tiniest solution ever to be existed. To get a good measure of its size, let's look at the specification of this thing first.
Specifications-
*eX Core Size (5.9”x4.1”x0.8”) | Weight 1.57 lbs. / 0.71 kg.
*2x Intel Thunderbolt 3 Ports
*1x HDMI 2.0b audio and video output Port
*USB-C DC-IN Port
*Compact 90W USB-C power adapter w/Power Share Charge-Laptop up to 40w
*eX Core Size (5.9”x4.1”x0.8”) | Weight 1.57 lbs. / 0.71 kg.
*2x Intel Thunderbolt 3 Ports
*1x HDMI 2.0b audio and video output Port
*USB-C DC-IN Port
*Compact 90W USB-C power adapter w/Power Share Charge-Laptop up to 40w
So, just by looking at the pictures and the size specifications, you’ve got an idea about how much tiny it is. As it's an extremely lightweight and compact solution, This thing is very easy to carry around, unlike those of Razer core where you are pretty much limited only to home usage. So, If you are searching for any perfect go-to anywhere solution, This is certainly it. With the built-in GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 Graphics Card, You can pair it with your compact devices such as ultrabooks and carry it around to play games at the maximum pleasure possible, Thanks to the eX Core!
Why eX Core is so important?
There are a lot of peoples who needs the power and the compactness in a laptop as well. Though we’ve already seen quite a number of thin and handy laptops with dedicated graphics cards already, but those are usually limited by the thermal performance or some other way in most of the cases and those laptops usually has a pretty bad battery backup. Also, a lot of people tends to fall for those ultra-thin ultrabooks these days, those usually doesn't have any dedicated gpu at all. So, before the eX Core, there wasn't any significant choices like this available to the consumers, and they were mostly limited to use those still chunky external graphics card docs at home. Granted, the eX Core doesn't give you the opportunity to use your own graphics card like those, & the gtx 1050 is pretty much an average level low end gpu for most of the stuffs,But it opens up a whole new possibilities for the tech industries later on to implement even more powerful graphics card in these smaller form-factors. So if you are still arrogant about the performance, you should at least consider the thing you are getting in a size of an average powerbank!
Thus, the reason why I think this eX Core is so important to the whole tech industry in general!
How did they manage to achive this much power in this kinda small form factor?
Edger Eliseo, the founder & CEO of exclim said “Our engineers have worked for more than five years, seeking and building the most advanced technology to create an external graphics card with the powerful performance available today.”
He also quoted that -“The biggest challenge we faced was power consumption. Thanks to NVIDIA’s newest architecture, we were able to maximize efficiency to build and bring the world’s first portable eGPU to market.”
So,Thanks to the efficiency and less power draw of the current gen graphics options, they were able to cram a full fledged gtx 1050 graphics card with 4GB GDDR5 Vram,a bit of oddity from its usual 2GB Brothers found in its desktop form factors with factory OC at 1680 Mhz. So couple of interesting things to look up here. Firstly, the inclusion of 4GB VRam with no downclock at all should mean a bit of performance improvement when compared apples to apples. Secondly, the 1680 Mhz OC should indicate the thermal headroom in this guy is pretty good. It will be really interesting to see if you can overclock this guy at all!
Is eX Core the right thing for you?
After all this, we can assume it with any doubt that this thing is really good for its purpose. But, Is it really for you?
Well, let's look at it from some different angles.
Firstly, if you have a desktop computer which happens to have thunderbolt 3, I don't think you should need to consider it at all. Cause you will find some pretty powerful graphics cards such as the gtx 1060 3Gb at that price of the eX Core (US-399$) which will be a lot more superior in all of the category, And having the desktop already means you have no worries about space either. So, It's not really for the desktop end of the market.
However,if you have a pc and a compact laptop & you want to have the same graphics power in both of those systems, This thing can kinda be an alternative solution instead of something like Razer Core. Or, if you have a computer with those extremely compact mini itx cases which doesn't support any gpu at All, then the eX Core can be a good portable solution as well.
However, The best case scenario will be for those who had to change their laptops/ultrabooks every year to increase some graphical/ computing power. Now, with this, you don't have to waste a ton of money every year, Instead you can use the eX Core for your graphical solution and have the power available to you as long as your device has thunderbolt 3.0 connection! Not to mention, it also saves quite a lot of time and hassles by not upgrading every year!
So, before wrapping up this overview, let's talk about a few more things about it.
In the box, you will get the eX Core module with the GTX 1050 4GB, a Thunderbolt 3(USB Type-C) Cable, Compact 90 watt adapter for the eX Core which can also charge your laptop's battery, a manual from exklim & a carrying case- All for a cost of 399$!
Now, the big question will be- is spending 399$ for the exklim eX Core worth it?. If you have a desktop computer, this is not worth it at all for you. But for the conditions I stated above, Considering the fact that it opens up a whole new way for possibilities with portable operations, & simply the fact that there is nothing like it at this moment, yeah, I can simply assume without any doubt that this thing is sure worth every penny it asks for! Not to mention, other options such as Razer core V2 costs 499$ itself without any gpu at all, I don't think you should be anymore doubtful about its worthiness.
So me being a tech enthusiast, I am really looking forward to the opportunities created by this eX Core, Specially seeing even better and powerful gpu’s being put on into such small form factors. All fingers crossed for that!
