Mechanical Chiclet keyboards : The Future?

Earlier this year Tesoro’s ultra low profiled chiclet styled mechanical keyboard equipped with Gateron blue switches and RAZER’s ultra-low profile mechanical switches in their throwaway iPad case started a spark of innovation in the field of keyboard manufacturing . And as RAZER recently really started putting their ultra low profiled mechanical switches in their new razer blade pros …. Maybe this is the right time to talk about if low profiled mechanical keyboards are really the future or not . This is A.R.M from frenzyweb360 and today we ask the question if mechanical chiclet keyboards are the future of the keyboard industry ...

First of all mechanical keyboards are all about that beautiful tactile feedback and its long key travel but lower actuation point . Mix them altogether and you are up for a satisfying experience . And these low profiled mechanical switches do actually provide you quite a tactile or in some cases a clicky feedback like a mechanical keyboard (well not quite the same though) . But its shorter travel distance and more shorter actuation point does separate it from your full blown mechanical keyboards and some users may find it not so satisfying . And it’s quite different from your average laptop’s scissor switch chiclet keyboards as scissor switches need to be fully bottomed out to register a keystroke while these mechanical ones don’t ! So they are much easier and satisfying to type on . But traditional mechanical keyboard users won’t find it as satisfying as a full blown mechanical keyboards due to it’s lower key travel distance . On the another side though the keys are much more durable and last longing than your traditional laptop keys .

But let’s see the pros and cons at a glance ..-
Pros:
  • They are ultra low profiled as their name would suggest and they will be much more portable than your big fat traditional mechanical keyboard .
  • They are more satisfying to type on rather than scissor switch chiclet keyboards or membrane keyboards as well.
  • They are much more durable than scissor switch chiclet keyboards.
  • They provide a much tactile and loud feedback than scissor switches as scissor switches make almost no sound at all .(the sound can also be a con for some people but come on, it’s a mechanical keyboard ! )
  • It can be a good upgrade from a traditional scissor switch chiclet keyboard.
Cons:
  • The lower key travel distance and actuation point can be annoying for some people.
  • It wont be as satisfying as a full blown mechanical keyboard for most people
  • It will be costlier.
So it has many good and bad sides but I really don’t see traditional mechanical keyboard users switching to these kind of low profiled mechanical keyboards in the near future. Though it can be a good upgrade for laptop and mac users as they tend to use chiclet keys rather than full mechanical ones , I think it’s still a pretty wonderful thing that how the technology is rapidly growing and the laptop keyboards are now also a part of the technological evolution as well ! So that’s for me today. Don’t forget to check out our other awesome posts and stay tuned with frenzyweb360 for more awesome blogs. Over and out .
