Are Linear Mechanical Switches Really Worth It
So, when you think about a keyboard with mechanical switches you think about that tactile or that sweet audible clicky feedback right? But what about linear switches such as cherry mx reds and blacks etc ? They don’t provide any clicky feedback neither any tactile feedback as well ! So using them would almost be like using a membrane keyboard right? And yet they are pretty expensive like other mechanical switches .. so today at frenzyweb360 this is A.R.M and today we ask the question if linear mechanical switches are really worth it .
So, linear switches are still mechanical switches so you don’t actually need to bottom the switch out to register a keystroke but the problem is , as there is no tactile or clicky feedback on each keypress so, you wont be able to feel if you already passed the actuation point or not, which can be rather pretty annoying while typing . And the lack of a physical feedback might affect your typing speed as well. You need to really get used to typing on this or this lack of feedback might make you regret buying a linear switch keyboard . So most people won’t suggest you to buy a linear switch keyboard for typing . Neither will I as well .
On the other hand if we want to compare linear switches with membrane keyboards , linear switches don't need to be bottomed out to register a keystroke while the membrane ones do need to be bottomed out . And the rubber domes in membrane keyboards do lose their elasticity over time and becomes mushier day by day while linear mechanical switches are much more durable and less mushier than rubber domes .So linear switches are still lightyears ahead of membrane switches . And typing on a linear switched keyboard will be much faster and less mushier than typing on a membrane one .
When it comes to gaming though, we can see a much positive picture. But let me warn u that mechanical switches are totally about personal preferences so anyone can choose anything they prefer comfortable to use .
So, many gamers don’t like the clicky or the tactile resistance on mechanical switches as they think it slows them down and yes I do agree that many games where fast keypresses are crucial , you wouldn’t really care about getting a feedback from the keypress anyways because you will be immersed in the game , not within your satisfying keyboard or anything. You will be almost bottoming out the keys anyways so there will be no chance of the keystroke not getting registered (unless your keyboard is broke of course) And on the other hand linear switches are very quiet and almost doesn’t produce any audible sound (unless you bottom out the keys with all your energy that is … but that isn’t the switch’s fault anyways) so the quietness is good for game streamers and for those who find the typewriter-like noise of keyboards annoying as well . So in terms of gaming , linear switches can be much preferable than in a typing scenario.
So, is buying a keyboard with linear switches worth it? In the end my answer is , it is your investment so buy anything you prefer :3 but you should test which keys are much preferable for you . Because mechanical keyboards aren’t cheap and you wouldn’t wanna waste your money on something you wont even like to use in the future would u?
