Aiden Markram's Career & Anticipation

South Africa were looking for a decent right-arm opener who can give a good start with Dean Elgar and can create variation at their opening partnership. They had selected Stephen Cook who was performing very good at the beginning time of his career but got faded away. In 2017 his performance was frustrating and in that year his average was less than a double digit mark. Then South African team management selected Aiden Markram at their home series against Bangladesh and Markram showed his class in his very first test innings by scoring 97 runs at Potchefstroom. He didn't need to look back after that. This is Mashud Hasan from Frenzyweb360 and today I'm going to discuss about Aiden Markram's short but wonderful career.

Aiden Markram had his debut in first-class for Northerns against South Western District at the domestic league of South Africa in 2014. He has an average of 47.8 in first-class with 9 centuries and 17 fifties. Markram had his test debut against Bangladesh at Potchefstroom in 2017 and scored 97 out of 152 balls and proved his worth. He didn't have to wait for a long time to capture his maiden century. He scored 143 runs out of 186 balls at Bloemfontein against the same opponent. He ended that test series by scoring 255 runs out of 3 innings with an average of whopping 85. He continued that form against the next series against Zimbabwe and again scored a hundred. This time he scored 125 runs out of 204 balls at Port Elizabeth. He ended the year of 2017 by scoring 380 runs in 4 innings at an average of 95.

He had a perfect starting but there was still doubt about his capabilities against strong teams because he still didn't face any top 5 test teams at that time. At 2018, South Africa played their first test series of that year against India at their home. In that series Markram scored an innings of 94 runs at Centurion. India had a battery pace bowling lineup of Ishant Sharma-Jasprit Bumrah-Hardik Pandya and their spin bowling lineup was also very strong due to Ashwin's presence. After facing such condition and opposition, Markram still handled the situation very nicely. But in that series, his performance wasn't as good as everyone expected. He scored only 140 runs out of 6 innings with an average of almost 24.
After all, it was a forgettable series for him.

However, he bounced back from that temporary bad form very strongly. He didn't perform good at Johannesburg against Australia but scored his 3rd century right after that 1st test. He once again score 143 runs out of 218 balls at Durban. Again he failed to deliver at Port Elizabeth test. He also had to start the Cape Town test by scoring zero run for the first time in his test career. But at the 2nd innings he scored 84 out of 145 balls in a really pressured situation and tough condition. He continued his returned form and scored a "daddy" hundred at Johannesburg yesterday. Actually yesterday's innings was the reason why I'm writing a content about his young innings today. Yesterday he scored 152 runs out of 216 balls including 17 fours and a six. This is one of his 4 centuries but it's something special. It proved once again about his high-end capabilities to face big swings of the new ball.

Markram's 152 run innings is stacked up with various types of shots around the ground that's actually giving an idea about Markram's pinch hitting ability. He opened up his boundary account by hitting a solid drive against Hazlewood's length ball out of the off stump. In that same over he hit a leg glance against a good in-swinging delivery. He played some square cuts against over pitched deliveries by using the pace of the ball. The cover drive he played against Nathan Lyon's typical off-break stunned the critics of this game. The only six he scored in this innings was by smashing Lyon's off-spin by dragging down the ground. He reached his fifty by hitting a straight drive and scoring a boundary through the long-on. He played some lofted cuts against Hazlewood but that didn't let him give his wicket up but he placed those shots on the gap to secure boundaries. He also played a very stunning hook towards the square leg. He played another cover drive against Lyon but it was executed by coming down the wicket. He pushed Lyon's flightened delivery through the third-man to reach the triple figure for the 4th time. He was very cunning and careful about selecting his shots in his entire innings. He played few cover drives and square cuts against Cummins' overwhelming paces. He had built up the top order's runs by consistently scoring runs. He had a 89 run partnership with Amla where his contribution was 56. After that, he had a partnership of 105 runs with de Villiers  where his contribution was 64. Which means, Markram was the man who was striking the ball for most of the time and leading the South African innings to a big total.

Markram had his ODI debut against India at the home-series but he didn't perform well. He scored 193 runs out of 7 innings with an average of only 27.57 and scored only one fifty. On the other hand, he had 10 test matches till now and scored 963 runs out of 17 innings with a blistering average of 56.64 and scored 4 centuries along with 3 fifties. He is in magnificent form and has a good chance to be one of South Africa's greatest batsmen, or even further. He still has a long way in front of him. He is yet to be tested at Asia's dusted pitches and flaming condition. South African fans are definitely expecting from him to reflect his form out-side their home-ground too and deliver a consistent performance for a long time.
